What I learned this Week

I've kind of stopped participating in this blog carnival, but I've decided to pick it up again for this week.

In Hawaii and California on our trip, I tried out two different candy stores. I consider myself a slight chocolate connoisseur (k, not really) since working in a chocolate store for 3 years. I love to try out new chocolates, but they are never as good as what I'm used to. And I don't think it is a complete bias on my part. I am just now reviewing this as I am nearly done with the pieces I purchased finally.

Chocolate
We went into a Godiva store, which had all types of weird truffles. I got several - "cheesecake," "strawberry banana," and an "apple tart" or something. They were all....very close to their natural flavors, but those flavors just don't belong in chocolate!

At the Rocky Mountain Candy Factory, which I have gone into before, I finally got two pieces of "Seafoam." At my work, we get customers that ask for it constantly. My boss says that Seafoam is hard to get right and is not worth it for us to make. Needless to say, I got two pieces to try. Last night, I finally ate one of them. Or rather, took a few bites. I was not impressed in the least. It had a horrible after taste!

So, I've learned this week that sticking with flavors you know is sometimes best!

Things I've Learned in Marriage

I wrote this post in June of 2008 after I had been married for 2 months. I figured I'd bring some of it back for this week, and add some more! Our one year wedding anniversary is on the 4th of April, so I figured this was appropriate!!

Things I have discovered about living on my own and married life:
  • Doing the dishes can actually be an enjoyable past time..or at least tolerable.
  • Cooking is much more fun when doing it with your husband.
  • We buy a lot of ice cream. We went a week without some a few weeks back and that was horrible =P
  • You actually have to make and enforce a routine, otherwise it won't happen.
  • It's great having a husband who isn't afraid to kill spiders.
  • Grocery shopping is considered "cute" when you are newlyweds.
  • Getting asked about the married life several times a day gets old.
  • Living on your own is actually not nearly as hard as I was imagining it to be. I miss my parents and my cats, but I am pretty happy being moved out.
  • Not living with cats is a pretty sad existence (if you love cats), which is amplified when going to the in-law's place and playing with their cats.
  • Being married and taking care of yourself actually means you have less free time and time together (sometimes) than you did before...figure that one out.
  • Having 2 days off in a row together is such a blessing! (much more so than just one)
I would add now, 10 months later:
  • Those stereotypes I always heard about marriage? Yeah, it is easy for them to come true. That's where the work comes in!
  • Getting asked about when we are having children gets old after about the second time. Especially when it is people that don't need to know.
  • Living by ourselves is such a blessing. After babysitting for my in laws twice now, I definitely understand why you move out when you get married and don't have kids right away! Coming home to our own quiet place was so relaxing after those times!
  • Trying to do homework and actually focusing on it is hard on a marriage. There is not a lot of freedom to stop thinking about what needs to get done to spend time together that is rich.

What I Learned This Week 9

I've learned a couple things in the past couple weeks.

-That housewarming we went to a few weeks back? The lady had a nice candle in a short window. In the photo below, you can see a problem...that none of us had noticed. It singed the paint above it! Never put a tall candle in a short window!

-I took a lot of photos on my birthday at the bowling alley. I bumped up the ISO to lighten things up a bit. I know how ISO works, but boy, it was bad. All of my photos turned out fairly grainy. Next time, I will know better with that camera!

I can't think of much today, as I have a bit of a cold. For more, visit Musings of a Housewife!

What I Learned This Week 7

I learned several things this past week...mostly after I made last week's post!

- Don't mess with blog themes! I learned this one the hard way. Well, could have been worse. 've done a fair amount of coding and such in my time, so I'm not completely clueless, but I don't understand Blogger templates. I wanted to change my look up a bit and downloaded a free one. There was a warning to save all of my sidebar stuffs, and I did that, and downloaded my previous template. I switched over to a new template. It looked pretty awful. And Blogger would not cooperate in letting me change my fonts and such. So I reverted back to the old layout, to my dismay. I was able to quickly get my old widjets from the sidebar back up and running.

Then I attempted to add another column to my layout from a tutorial Musings had...but Blogger would not cooperate. However, I did go into the HTML of the old template and do some tweaking. No more of that nasty down-pointing arrow. I changed the colors of the layout to my old website's minty look.

- It takes nearly 12 months for me to go through a 12 ounce bottle of shampoo. I got some new shampoo and conditioner on our honeymoon 11 months ago, and the conditioner has been gone a month or so, but the shampoo has lasted this long...I think it has a week or 2 more uses out of it. Who would have thought it takes me that long to go through shampoo!

- I learned that I finally have a celebrity look a like! On a forum the other day, I got this question, "Is it just me or do you have a striking similarity to Natalie Portman?" The kid used this photo for a reference. I can sort of see a resemblance, but not a huge amount. What do you all think?

So there you have it. For more, go to Musings of a Housewife!

What I Learned This Week 6

I really learned this week that is ok to quit something. I quit my Accounting class that had been making me crazy for two months. I think that it has been a pride issue for me, this not quitting. But if it is not good, not making my life better, and just worse, why should I continue? I will pick the class up next spring, so not all is lost, by any means. It's been an important lesson for me, to learn that is ok to quit, and also to say no to things.

What I Learned this Week

1. If you think that something will be at a certain time, research it a bit more. I had read in a book about seeing the eagles be fed that they would be fed at sunrise....now that the Eagle Lady is gone, the feeding is done at 10:30 am.

2. Safeway is a great place for a bathroom break. Working retail, I hate it when people come into the store to just use the restroom. But in Safeway...it really doesn't matter!

3. Setting up an account with the power company is not going to be nearly as painful as I was expecting..

4. I have a strong dependency on stuff...namely my camera and my journal. I already knew that I had a strong dependency on the camera. I use that thing pretty much everyday. And I left my journal at home tonight. On accident, that is, and I had to ask for some paper at small group (I write a ton of notes down for everything). Man am I dependent on that thing!

What I've Learned: Week 3

1. It was reiterated that even local people can be not so intelligent. "How do the tourists get up here?" "You mean the street??" "Yes." Me thinking, "How did you get up here? You walked, you drove..."

2. The same problem can go wrong on a car over and over again.

3. Never order a Cornish Game Hen thinking it will be a small meal.

4. Putting together an IKEA floor lamp is a piece of cake. No idea if other ones are as easy (probably) but this one took about 2.5 minutes. I have been wanting a floor lamp for months. We ordered this one new off of ebay, but it took forever to come (a month) and it came today.

5. Adding online friends to Facebook can be easier than someone in the same town. Yesterday I got a friend request from someone I don't know. He is friends with many of my friends, including my sis in law. C even knew him; he worked with him. But I have no idea who he is. I have one guess where I know him from, but it doesn't add up. So I'm still sitting on it. And yet, tonight, a friend from the website C works at added me and I immediately added him when I realized who he was. Ironic, no? If not disturbing.

What I've Learned: Week 2

Musing of a Housewife's carnival...I learned a few things this week:
1. When it crosses your mind that you should eat or start getting ready, do it. We weren't aware that C was playing for youth group this past week. His brother, who is in charge, had not told him, so when his sister called us at 5:45, when C needed to be there at 5...it was rather bad timing. We hadn't eaten or started getting ready yet. Needless to say, C wasn't able to practice really.

2. Crying at a TV show episode is perfectly ok.

3. Trying new seafood is perfectly ok, and can even be good!

4. It can and will keep snowing if it feels like it.

5. Not leaving the house for days on end is perfectly ok.

6. "Don't doubt in the dark what was revealed to you in the light."

7. Chatting with new friends who are ignorant about AK can be an enjoyable pastime.

Things I've learned, Week 1

What I Learned This Week

This looks to be a fun blog carnival. I might try to participate every week, we'll see.

1. Last night I learned more about differences between men and women and relationships...hopefully I can implement those learnings in my relationship.

2. This past weekend I learned that I really don't want kids right now. And that I don't want my house to have such an open policy as my in laws'. I already knew this, but it was just another reinforcement.

3. I also learned another reason why when you get married, that you move out! And try not to have kids before then. You literally get no time together, because younger siblings want attention all the time.

That's all I can think of. Next week I'll have more time to think about this. Did you notice how these all have to do with marriage? Hmmm..
